Under 14s Season Review

18 Jul 2016

I have got to say that not only has it been one of the best league campaigns we have played but in terms of the sides in the Division, I do think it was one of the most balanced with all teams able to take points of each other making every game highly competitive - certainly the most satisfying wins for me were the boys beating our previous bogey team Risborough Home and away, Thame away and Wendover and we also beat the eventual champions Chalfont in a very satisfying 4-1 win.

It ultimately meant that we narrowly missed promotion into the 1st Division (more of a close shave) by finishing 3rd in the league.

We carried on our form into the Cup and we had a great run. most memorable was the game against Thame where we went 2- 0 up from 2 Dom strikes only for us to miss a hatful of chances and for them to get 1 back and then be pushing for the equaliser – it was certainly tense and I remember in the dying moments Tom pulling off one of his best saves of the season to push a shot wide that was arrowing for the top corner.

We battled through every round deservedly winning and reaching the Final – We all travelled to the outstanding Flackwell Heath stadium (not quite the 20000 seater stadium that I think Luke was imagining but it certainly was a great experience for the boys)  - I was starting to think that the odds were stacking up against us after losing our Goal Keeper the day before with a pulled shoulder because he decided to practice a penalty goal celebration, plus Callum had been on crutches the week before recovering from a Calf strain which meant he was 50/50 at best.

Thank fully Taylor stepped in and did a fabulous job between the sticks but he was supported superbly by the whole team from defence all the way through, including Callum who made a great recovery. Hughenden scored a speculative shot from long range which was just that perfect height and impossible to reach - I still believed we could get back into it – we played some great football in the second half and dominated the game but nothing seemed to go our way and to be fair to Hughenden they defended really well – the final whistle went and we couldn’t find the equaliser – everyone was gutted but in the end the boys played well and as I said to them they should be proud of their performance as I couldn’t have been more proud of them.

Risborough Tournament – Winners

With the league and Cup campaigns over we only had the Tournaments to look forward to but what a start at Risborough – beating the likes of Thame, Risborough and beating Wendover 4-0 in the semi we walked away well-deserved Winners.

End of Season Day out – Oxford United v Wycombe Wanderers

Finally we had the end of season day out – I think a lot of parents thought James and I were mad taking the boys out for the day but in all seriousness they were all brilliantly behaved – Bowling was great where we found a dark horse in Theo’s ability especially – then for lunch and to be fair there are not many that can match Olly and Callum an their ability to devour a huge amount of pizza – Finally we topped it off with the Oxford v Wycombe game and although it wasn’t the finest display of football it was a great result with Oxford gaining promotion – Unfortunately the boys ability to ignore the announcer and Invade the pitch after wards was a particular highlight plus of course a few of the boys making the Oxford United Face Book page!

All in all a very good season, and with a few more signings on board to complement our very good squad we are all looking forward to the U15 season ahead.
